Incision-Free Cancer Treatment: What Are Catheter Therapy (IGT) and Hyperthermia?

Is surgery-free, incision-free treatment possible? IGT, reaching the tumor's blood vessel directly via catheter, and hyperthermia, weakening the tumor with heat, are applied together in Japan.

Incision-Free Cancer Treatment: What Are Catheter Therapy (IGT) and Hyperthermia?

For some patients surgery is risky, or the tumor cannot be surgically removed. This is exactly where the incision-free approaches developed in Japan come in.

Catheter Therapy (IGT): a hair-thin catheter inserted through the groin is advanced under imaging guidance to the vessel feeding the tumor. The therapeutic agent is delivered directly to the tumor; the rest of the body is almost unaffected. There is no incision, general anesthesia is often unnecessary, and recovery after the procedure is fast.

Hyperthermia: tumor tissue is less resistant to heat than healthy tissue. Controlled heating of the region weakens tumor cells and can multiply the effect of radiation and drug therapies.

IGT Clinic and Kanae Otonoha Clinic in Japan are among the centers applying these methods together. They can open a new door when options are exhausted in metastatic and recurrent tumors.
