AFTV: the world's first cancer vaccine to reach Phase 3 in GBM
AFTV, the product of Prof. Dr. Tadao Ohno's 32-year research, is the first autologous tumor vaccine in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind Phase 3 trial in glioblastoma (GBM). In breast cancer, 10-year survival above 50% has been reported.
AFTV (Autologous Formalin-fixed Tumor Vaccine) is a personalized immunotherapy platform produced from the patient's own tumor tissue, developed by Japanese scientist Prof. Dr. Tadao Ohno over 32 years of research.
A world first in GBM: the ongoing multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial (jRCT2031200153), running since 2021, is the world's first randomized Phase 3 trial evaluating an autologous formalin-fixed vaccine in glioblastoma. Completion is planned within 2026.
Breast cancer: in stage 4 patients who developed metastasis after surgery, 10-year survival above 50% has been reported when combined with radiotherapy.
Liver cancer: an 81% relative reduction in post-surgical recurrence risk has been observed.
How is it applied? The vaccine is given intradermally as a total of 3 injections, usually at two-week intervals. By presenting the full spectrum of tumor antigens to the immune system, it activates CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses and cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
Who is it not for? Patients with active autoimmune disease, very advanced (cachectic) conditions, or immune systems weakened by prolonged intensive chemotherapy.
