BNCT in Recurrent Head & Neck Cancer: Who Is Eligible?

Re-irradiation of a previously treated head & neck region is often impossible. BNCT, the first in the world to receive routine approval, steps in exactly at this point.

BNCT in Recurrent Head & Neck Cancer: Who Is Eligible?

Recurrence in head & neck cancers is one of the hardest scenarios for patient and physician: the region has often already received radiotherapy, and giving conventional radiation to the same area a second time exceeds the dose limit healthy tissues can bear.

BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) makes the difference at this point. The boron compound accumulates in tumor cells; the neutron beam destroys only the boron-loaded cells at the cellular level. A single session is sufficient for most patients and damage to surrounding tissue is minimal.

Who is eligible? Those with recurrent head & neck tumors in a previously irradiated region; local recurrences unsuitable for surgery; patients who have exhausted standard options. Japan is the first country to approve BNCT for routine clinical use, and Osaka Medical Oncology Center is the hub of this field.

To find out whether you are a candidate, upload your reports via the CyberCellX patient panel; the Japanese expert board evaluates them within 5 business days.
