Virus-free CAR-T: the piggyBac transposon approach lowers cost
The piggyBac transposon system, replacing costly viral vectors of conventional CAR-T manufacturing, reduces cost and simplifies GMP processes.

Conventional CAR-T cell manufacturing uses expensive lentiviral or retroviral vectors to transfer genes into T cells. Japan is focusing on a virus-free alternative — the transposon (piggyBac) system — to overcome both this cost and strict GMP regulations.
PiggyBac-based gene transfer eliminates the need for viral vector production, significantly reducing manufacturing costs and simplifying the process. This approach opens the door for CAR-T therapy to reach more patients.
