Japan grants the world's first iPSC therapy approvals

In early 2026, two iPSC-derived therapies for Parkinson's disease and heart failure received official approval — paving the way for next-generation cell therapies such as iCART.

Japan grants the world's first iPSC therapy approvals

The iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cell) technology that earned Shinya Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize has become Japan's national hallmark. In early 2026, Japan made medical history by granting the world's first official approvals for iPSC-derived therapies — for Parkinson's disease and heart failure.

The same mature infrastructure is now being applied to oncology: the iPSC-derived CAR-T (iCART) program developed at Kyoto University's CiRA is advancing toward clinical testing in collaboration with Takeda. Producing unlimited, standardized CAR-T cells from a single cell line promises to eliminate the weeks-long wait for patient-specific cell manufacturing.

At 2D Healthcare we closely follow these developments and refer eligible patients to the relevant programs in Japan.
