What Is iPSC? How the Nobel-Winning Stem Cell Technology Is Used in Cancer

The 2012 Nobel Prize-winning iPSC technology reprograms adult cells into cancer-fighting immune cells. Japan is the world leader in this field.

What Is iPSC? How the Nobel-Winning Stem Cell Technology Is Used in Cancer

iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cell) is the technology that earned Shinya Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Ordinary adult cells such as skin or blood are 'rewound in time' in the laboratory, turning them into stem cells capable of becoming any cell in the body.

What is its connection to cancer? Immune cells produced from iPSCs (for example iCART — iPSC-derived CAR-T), unlike standard CAR-T, do not require collecting cells from the patient; they can be manufactured ready-made in the laboratory. This means treatment is possible even when the patient's own cells are weak.

Japan's role: Japan, the country where the technology was born, granted the world's first iPSC therapy approvals in 2026; Kyoto University's CiRA center is the global hub of the field.

For whom? Research protocols are rapidly expanding in blood cancers and some solid tumors. Eligibility is determined by the Japanese expert board's report review — for a free preliminary evaluation, you can upload your reports via our patient panel.
