There is a special visa type for foreign patients who will receive treatment in Japan: the Medical Stay Visa. This visa is granted not only to the patient but also to a companion, and provides the right to stay for the duration of treatment.
How does the process work? First, the letter of acceptance: the treatment center in Japan officially accepts the patient after the expert board evaluation. Then the accredited coordinator (I-Cell Networks) issues a guarantee letter — a medical visa application cannot be made in Japan without a coordinator guarantee. The visa application is made to the Embassy of Japan; passport, letter of acceptance, guarantee letter and treatment plan are submitted.
Points to note: the visa duration is granted according to the treatment calendar and can be extended in Japan if needed. A separate application is made for the companion. The entire organization — appointments, accommodation, transfers — is coordinated through the coordinator institution.
